After attending no less than 10 masterminds with some of the brightest minds in fitness, coaching, personal success and business, and hosting numerous fitness and coaching industry events, doing podcasts, blogging, speaking from the stage, hosting radio shows………. and doing TV “stuff”…… I decided it was time to host my own JSE Mastermind group and give back a bit more. I wanted to see how much we could enhance lives in just 2 days.
The results were incredible!
Just to be clear, here are a couple definitions of a “mastermind group”.
Definition #1: A small group that you meet with for the purpose of reinforcing growth and success while offering support to one another; a group that has been identified and set aside to concentrate specifically on growth and manifesting success in the following areas; finances, spirituality, relationships, business, wellness, etc. (from growandimprove.com)
Definition #2: Mastermind groups offer a combination of brainstorming, education, peer accountability and support in a group setting to sharpen your business and personal skills. A mastermind group helps you and your mastermind group members achieve success. Participants challenge each other to set important goals, and more importantly, to accomplish them. The group requires commitment, confidentiality, willingness to be creative and brainstorm ideas/solutions, and support each other with total honesty, respect and compassion. Mastermind group members act as catalysts for growth, devil’s advocates and supportive colleagues. This is the essence and value of mastermind groups. (from thesuccessalliance.com)
I define it as …..
A group of like-minded, forward-thinking and driven people who come together to help, share, encourage, give resources and provide solutions for all members of the group. There is no judgement. There is only support, creative brain-storming, fun and results.
HERE ARE 3 LESSONS FROM THE 2014 JSE MASTERMIND (designed to help fitness, personal training, wellness, health, nutrition and personal development experts make more money, build a successful business, help more people and have more fun)
#1 – Never let your current resources determine your ultimate goal or dream. We quickly learned that simply because you currently don’t have the skills, ability, software, knowledge, experience, family support, website or video editing skills, IT DOES NOT MEAN you cannot make your dreams a reality. Within two days, everyone in the group has the tools and resources needed to make the next major steps in their business. And, the group will continue to support and guide each member throughout the year. Always remember, the answers you must know are likely the exact skills someones does without even thinking about it. ASK THE RIGHT PERSON FOR HELP and add value to their life for helping you!
#2 – It’s good to revisit old ideas when you have the influence and support of the right people. Sometimes we give up on our dreams. Often, it’s because we get ideas or feedback from THE WRONG PEOPLE. You cannot determine your goals and dreams when you are influenced by good intentioned people who just simply have NO IDEA what type of constructive feedback is needed. Sometimes it’s as simple as reverse engineering your goals and aspirations. Go to a point in your mind where you experience your “ideal average day in life”- then work backwards from that point. If your current actions will not take you back once again to that ideal average day, you must change your path. It’s a fun and very enlightening process.
#3 – Always stay focused on one aspect of your goal until you make considerable progress before straying off and starting 3 other projects. I think it’s okay to “get set” to start new things (such as acquiring new information, books, programs, course, etc when they are available, on sale, or the timing is just right). However, you need to make considerable progress on your current project (or even finish it) before you dive head first into your next project. If you have too many “open loops” your brain keeps going back to close these loops. Then, you cannot focus well on any one task, and that brings out the feeling of overwhelm. Then, nothing happens. Not good.
According to Forbes Magazine, here are 7 benefits of joining a mastermind group:
http://www.forbes.com/sites/chicceo/2013/10/21/7-reasons-to-join-a-mastermind-group/
1. You’ll be part of an exclusive community. Joining a mastermind typically involves you being invited by the members or going through an application process. The other members need you just as much as you need them, so quality of experience and knowledge is crucial to all involved.
2. Advisement. Once you are involved in a mastermind, that feeling of “being alone” while running your business is gone. The other members of the group turn into business advisors of sorts and vice versa.
3. Collaboration is the name of the game. You may find someone in the group that is a perfect fit to work on a project with you. Or, you may be the perfect person to help another member as well. The group works together collaboratively, to achieve more together.
4. Extend your network. Joining a mastermind expands your network exponentially and rapidly. If you are in business, you know how important your network is. By joining a mastermind, you instantly add to your network and typically gain the networks of those in the group with you.
5. New learning. Everyone in the mastermind is unique in skill, experience and connections. By interacting and sharing your challenges, it’s almost certain that someone in your mastermind will have a solution for you and you may also be able to offer a solution, connection or tactic to help another in the group.
6. Cross-promotion. When you join a mastermind, you will most likely find ways to help each other by utilizing cross promotion. Finding ways to help each other through promoting to your respective networks.
7. Think bigger. Being in a mastermind will truly give you a Master Mind! You can’t help but think bigger and stretch beyond your boundaries when surrounded by amazing people doing amazing things.
Masterminds are incredible and can do wonders for your business as well as for you, personally. Growing in a group is not only more effective, it’s quite a bit more fun!
