This was a lot of fun for me. I was asked by students at a personal training school to speak to them via Skype about how to start a personal trainer career and business. They asked great questions and I was totally impressed by them. I sure wish I had an opportunity like this when I was starting my fitness career.
If you are brand new to the fitness industry, or a seasoned expert, you will learn a lot from their insight and great questions. I think all of us were surprised how the conversation developed over the time we had together.
Enjoy this video and “show some love” for the students in the form of a comment below!

Hey John! I have to say that John is awesome….I had a very successful bootcamp in AZ that I sold about a year ago, mainly to take some time for myself and be with my family back in Michigan. We also found out last year that my dad (LOVE HIM and seems alot like your dad John) had lung cancer. So, moving back to Michigan was meant to be…for now. BTW, they got it all, he had “operable lung cancer” and is now cancer free…my dad is a TANK still at age 75! Go dad!!! Also John, I don’t think I knew your were a TWIN…WOW! I have twin sisters (Lynn an Bren), cool. Ok, I digress…anyway I am training for a guy here in MI that owns a bunch of Adventure bootcamps (David) because I want to stay in the game. I may start another camp or biz someday but for now this works for me…and I’m getting a “regular” full time sales job too. But I continue to listen to John and other trainers, other “gurus” in the field because It helps me not only in my personal life, but my professional. And listen to John….I got caught up in all the BS out there…overworked myself and didn’t get enough help with things that I don’t like to do (accounting, admin stuff)…I did it all …and had to let go (for now) a biz where my biz made an average of $85K a year…first and second year was close to $99K a year. Guys and gals….you have to take care of yourself while you are taking care of others. Keep loving what you do and don’t let that biz wear you down. Be smart, you can’t do it all!….I ran my business by myself for almost 5 years. I liked selling, marketing, getting referalls…i hated bookkeeping, admin stuff, being on the phone. Get someone to do what you don’t like while you do what you love…whatever that is and if you go off on your own. Anyway, my 2 cents. I plan on staying in the field, not sure in what capacity…but I’m glad I met John Spencer Ellis and his wife! They both are inspiring! Good luck to all of you, whatever you do in this field!
Dawn (wow, that was a lot…john is used to that from me…LOL!!!)

Oh and I also LOVED training and getting people fit! Seeing how all my clients were gettting fit and bonding with other campers and seeing how fitness was helping their mind body and soul….that was great. I wasn’t in it just for the money, that was just a nice side affect. If you are in this industry for the right reasons (ie, helping people) then you will do well. don’t feel BAD about making money helping people…do you think Donald Trump feels bad making all that money for his show and real estate? Doubt it. Don’t feel like you have to be a ‘marter” just because you are training. Was I the cheapest camp in town or the cheapest training option? nope. But I provided a great service that included training, nutrition, support and results….and I cared. Anyway, just an afterthought. I’ll be back in this field full time and I will take all i have learned from my successes and my failures…you should to..what is the saying?…”It’s not a failure when you fall if you pick something up on the way back up.”…somehting like this…
