You know there is a right way and a wrong way to build your business network. That’s because there is a right way and wrong way to make business introductions.
Do it wrong, and you will lose friends and relationships. When you do it right, you build a powerful network.
I’ve been building my network a particular way for some time, but I didn’t have a name for my method. However, 2 weeks ago I spoke at a men’s business and health event in San Diego. One of the other speakers was Jordan Harbinger. He hosts one of the very top podcasts (The Art of Charm) in all of iTunes. Highly recommended. Millions of downloads per month. He was speaking about the same method I use, but he has fine tuned it, and given it a name. It’s called “The double opt-in introduction.”
Here’s how it works….
You know Bob and Karen.
Bob asks if you know Karen. He wants to be introduced because he has a talent, skill or technology which will help her business.
Before doing an email introduction (which is most common), you FIRST ask Karen if she would be receptive to the introduction. Explain why Bob wants to connect.
Only after Karen accepts, do you make the email introduction.
In the email, you remind each person why they are being introduced and how you know each of them.
Then, you BOW OUT!
If they do not remove you from email replies, remove yourself.
Here’s the important part….
EXPECT NOTHING IN RETURN.
- Do not keep score of how many intros you have made for anyone.
- Do not have an expectation of a given time for them to make introductions for you.
- Do not feel a need to participate in their new connection.
- Do not feel a need to be compensated for any new business created from their new connection.
Is that it?
Yes, that’s it. Follow these guidelines and you will build a powerful, smart and global network of people who appreciate you.
It will come full circle. That’s just the way it works.
Oh yeah….. one more important thing!
You must go to events where the A-players hangout, speak, attend and collaborate. Facebook and Linkedin can help, but NOTHING compares to meeting people at a seminar, workshop, mastermind or convention.
I offer you many events throughout the year, so be sure to stay posted for announcements. My site has details https://johnspencerellis.com/coaching
