Good day!
Or, should I ask, “good day?”
In other words, is your day good because you really feel it’s that way, or do you feel obligated to say it’s “good?”
Are you fulfilled personally and professionally?
Or, are you chasing something that isn’t congruent with your core values and beliefs?
Over the years, I’ve coached, trained and mentored THOUSANDS of people who – all too often – chase “the dream” at the expense of their personal wellbeing and contentment.
Let me be clear…
Goals are critical. Thinking bigger is often better. Ambition is vital. Support towards your goals is always helpful. Being stagnant can make you feel uninspired by life. Progress makes you feel alive.
And yet…
Always live your life according to your rules and nobody else’s. Don’t lose who you are in the process of reaching your goals. Steady progress over time is often better than “jumps” and then long pauses of no progress. Remain true to yourself.
Lesson’s learned from 2 of my friends:
The first lesson was from a friend named Jill who is a psychologist. She takes a far more “clinical” perspective on life success than I do. Yet, I think she has so many really great ideas. She was telling me that nobody can really have the highest levels of personal success in life (and business) until they have a deep understanding of this question: “Who am I?”
It sounds simple, yet when I went through a process like this with my coaching members of the Penthouse Group, www.penthousegroup.net, it quickly became obvious it’s a challenging task.
‘Who am I?’ is not what people think of you. It is not your hobby. It is not your career. It’s not where you live. It’s deep. Way down. Core.
Who are you as a person? What makes you tick? What do you believe is true about you? What makes you happy? What makes you cry? What do you know is true about you? What do you value most? Are your actions congruent with your core values?
Take some time to be honest with yourself about this question. Once you have a better understanding of it, all your other goals will move into place even better.
The second lesson comes from my friend named Steve. He once asked me this simple question: “Do you want to be right, or do you want to get what you want?”
In other words, is it so important for you to be right about a topic, that you would do more to protect your positioning about that belief than actually get what you want out of an outcome?
All too often, we feel a need to be “right” or “correct” or “accurate” instead of just getting the desired outcome. I know I’ve done this before.
Personally, I’ve found that it’s often better to give up the need or desire for approval. And, it’s even better to never have a need for approval in the first place. Yes, we all want to be accepted. That’s part of being human. However, when we focus on approval or acceptance, we often miss out on creating our own path and focusing on our own unique goals. And, we often ignore the newfound knowledge of “Who am I?”
If any of this sounds all too familiar, and you’d like to live a more fulfilled life, there’s no better time than right now.
Do yourself a big favor, and really consider what you’ve just read above.
Asking these two simple, profound, thought-provoking and life-enhancing questions can make today, tomorrow and the long-term future even better.
Start right now!
