Budapest, the capital of Hungary, ranks number one as the best destination in Europe for digital nomads. The capital city is the talk of the town in the summer season.

People who have been there talked about the city’s magnificence and grandeur in the most unexpected ways. It’s a city with a rich culture, vibrant colors and characteristic features to flaunt. There are digital nomads who believe Budapest to be more beautiful and mesmerizing than any of the Italian cities.

Budapest is basically a historical merger of three cities; Buda, Obuda and Pest. At present, the city is divided into different districts and will remind you of Madrid in many ways. But what is it like for a digital nomad to live in Budapest? The answer to this needs elaboration on different aspects Budapest has to offer.

THE BEST OF BUDAPEST

You can’t sum up the best of Budapest in mere words. You may find a lot of tourists everywhere, the grand and mesmerizing mid-European architecture to die for and the happening nightlife of the city. For recreation, remote workers can go for a cruise along the river and try the famous Thermal Baths. The weather in the city is fairly reasonable with mild to warm summers and snowy winter.

The light and airy summer weather make it a popular tourist and digital nomad destination in summers and it is around this time that you may find the city’s major attraction overcrowded with tourists. Also, you will find a lot of friendly and nice people in Budapest as you go south.

LIVING COSTS

ACCOMMODATION

It would be wrong to say that Budapest is one of the cheapest places for digital nomads. It is a fairly affordable city, but not a budget destination if you are visiting for a short period of time. Hungary has not taken up Euro and so it operates in Forit.

The cost of accommodation is moderate, if you are visiting with your partner it would cost you roughly around €600 to €1200 per month for reasonable accommodation. There are a lot of Airbnb apartments available in Budapest with kitchenette, bathroom, proper heating/cooling system, a desk to work from and an exceptional internet connection.

FOOD

The cost of eating out or cooking at home is acceptable. Prices for grocery and eating out is more or less similar to any European country; not amazingly cheap or highly expensive, they fall somewhere in between. You will find cheaper options for food as you move away from the city center with meals costing you around €6 but there are places where you can dine for €10 and above. So Budapest is not a cheap location for digital nomads in terms of food, but it is surely less expensive than the other European capitals.

TRANSPORTATION

Budapest is very much walkable but if great distances have to be covered then you can opt for public transport. It has a variety of public transport including the subways, buses, and trams that will cost you €1 to €2. However, do not go for yellow taxis for commuting as they are a rip-off.

BEST BUDAPEST CAFES FOR DIGITAL NOMADS

FEKETE CAFÉ

This is one of the recommended cafés by any digital nomad who have visited Budapest. The coffee is considered the best available in town with a robust WiFi connection. The place is considerably small but has an astounding garden view to it.

MAGVETO CAFÉ

The ambiance of this café makes it a perfect place for digital nomads to work. You may find a lot of remote workers and students working away on their laptops here however, the internet connection is not as great as at Fekete café.

CSERPES TEJIVO

This is digital nomad’s favorite place to work from. You can curl up in a corner and get some work done. Also, this place serves delicious cocoa drink along with cream to satisfy your taste buds as you work away.

BEST CO-WORKING SPACE IN BUDAPEST

KAPTAR

This is one of the first places to show up when you search for coworking spaces in Budapest. It is a widely popular co-working space located in the heart of Budapest with a neat and clean desk, modern interior and good internet connectivity. Kaptar is a perfect place for digital nomads to lounge in and work comfortably.

COFFICE

Another amazing place to find likeminded remote workers, Coffice is based on the concept of creating a digital nomad community in downtown. They want remote works to believe that home-office does not necessarily have to be lonesome. It is an amalgamation of a coffee shop, a co-working space for digital nomads and freelancers and a bar, all in one.

MOSAIK

This is fairly new as compared to the previous two but invites a number of creative from Budapest and the world. This place is a café, has a backyard with benches and a community place with many desks available for digital nomads and remote workers to work comfortably at.

ACCOMMODATIONS FOR DIGITAL NOMADS

BRODY HOUSE

Brody House is a beautiful hotel with 11 bedrooms that are designed individually and is most suitable for digital nomads who are staying in Budapest for a short while.

WOMBAT’S CITY HOSTEL

Located in the city center, Wombat’s City Hostel is ideal for travelers who come to stay from around the world and are on a budget.

SHANTEE HOUSE

Shantee House is a small and cute hotel with friendly staff and comfortable ambiance is a perfect choice for digital nomads.

THE VERDICT

It is a fairly good city, with a rich culture that can be compared to other European cities, offers great co-working spaces for digital nomads to work with an amazing internet connection.

As mentioned earlier, it is moderately affordable and since it is a European city, you may find access to basic amenities, decent English communication skills among masses and is a safe place for international travelers.

It is a great city for a digital nomad in summers, but winter can be uncertain.
