Belize is situated in a tropical environment which means there are wide varieties of outdoor activities that you can try out like watersports and magnificent beaches. There are great spots for diving and snorkeling in the city like the Barrier Reef which is second only to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef in size. Belize is widely considered as a retirement destination because of the affordable real estate opportunities and tourism is the main sector in the country. There are varieties of real estate market which offers opportunities for short and medium stays. It is best to stay here during the off-season where you are going to find more affordable rent. You can also opt for year-round housing and you can spend between $500 to $1000 for a furnished apartment depending on how close to the beach you will like to live. The best method to get the best deal is through word of mouth.
Utilities and Internet
There is a high infrastructure cost in Belize than other Central American countries and this is manageable due to the lower cost of food and rent. There is internet access that is readily available but the electricity costs are usually higher than expected. The rates for TV service and water are also available.
Transportation
You do not really need a car in San Pedro as you can easily explore the city on foot or bike. Another option is to get around using Electric golf carts but you will need to add the cost of electricity that you will use to charge the cart. Most people do not use cars because gas is quite expensive and it is best if you get around with taxi during rare occasions where you are going on a long distance trip. If you are going to the mainland, you can either fly but it is best if you ride a water taxi and it is only about 40-50 minutes if the trip is direct.
Food
This is dependent on your style as you can easily eat cheap or very expensive in Belize. Since it is an island, you should keep in mind that anything that is imported from long distance will cost a bit than at home and it is best to eat local foods so that your budget can stay low. The best food here is fresh seafood and veggies.
Alternate Option
If you want an affordable experience, you can head to Cayo district which not far from the Guatemalan border. You can head to San Ignacio which is a very nice, safe, and super affordable to stay. It is very popular because it is filled with outdoor activities and very affordable. The only thing is that it is quite away from the beaches.
