You likely know of the parable story of the Tortoise and the Hare (aka – the turtle and the rabbit).
Basically, the premise of the story is the “slow and steady” often wins the race. In the story, the hare takes off fast but runs out of steam before the finish line.
Life can often be like the parable story.
There have been too many times when I was the Hare. When I started my first business in my early 20s, I sprinted. At times, it was helpful. At times it was critical. However, slow and steady progress over time with measured predictable outcomes generally works best.
Hustle is critical to entrepreneurial success. However, if all you do is hustle, you are missing out on a lot of life. I’m going to encourage you to use what I call “strategic hustle.” Basically, hustle when critical, then go back to your steady progress mode and just “do the work”.
I have a friend from Canada who was in the “hare” mode for a few years. He wasn’t making as much progress as he’d hoped. He was getting burned out. He made a massive shift. For 1 year he just put his head down and worked. He didn’t attend conferences. He was less active on social media. He didn’t do interviews. He Just learned what he needed to learn and then applied the knowledge to benefit his business. The result? He was able to grow his business more in that year than in any time in the past. He was focused and made predictable, steady progress over the 365 days.
Sometimes we get caught up in “look what the guru is doing on Instagram” crap.
Let me tell you something from “the inside.”
Some of it is real, and A LOT of it is total crap.
Because so many people are full of it on Instagram, when I bought my penthouse in Las Vegas, most people thought I borrowed it for the day to do video shoots, or I just lease it. Because of all the nonsense on social media, I guess I cannot blame them for thinking that way.
I do know for a fact that some “gurus” move cars into their driveways or garages to “sell the dream.” WOW!
I know of a “new guru” who shot a video in front of a small commercial jet (that looks private) so it appears they are living large. I think the flight they were on was $79 (no joke).
I know that some “gurus” lease a jet for the day ($3k for a short flight), bring their “crew” and do as much content as possible in that time including “wardrobe changes” so it can be repurposed and give the illusion that they fly privately on a regular basis.
YOU focus on YOU and your customers. Be helpful, kind and consistent over time.
FOCUS ON WHAT REALLY WORKS!
1. Educate yourself
2. Realize that at least 50% of “gurus” are full of crap
3. Focus on a simple life that builds over time (slow and steady)
4. Invest early and often
5. Let go of anything that doesn’t fulfill you
I really hope this is helpful to you.
