“No man is an island,” as many say but in the world of digital nomads, that entails spending most your time being online earning a living, and engaging in other activities online and before you know it you might just be joining the other digital nomads in this train of loneliness. We all want something more than just working, making friends is also something we can do to add some fun, while we travel around the globe.
So just how can you meet people and make friends online while carrying on with your digital nomad lifestyle? Here are some of the ways, you can use to socialize and create friendships as a digital nomad.
Small Co-working Platforms
Small co-working platforms such as offices are tiny and close co-working spaces that are perfectly equipped and have other digital nomads who are open to meeting new people, working with them and make it more interactive by having events that bring people together, so this can be a great way to find, meet and make new friends as a digital nomad.
Digital Nomad Meet-ups and Conferences
This is also a great platform where there are other nomads whose purpose is to meet other nomads, (just like you )and organize events where they can meet up and bond. The amazing thing is that there are meetups for almost every area of interest, so it is easy to find one that is in line with your area of interest and join. You never know you could be meeting your travel partner in the process.
Private Membership Groups
These are small groups that are intimate, created specifically to allow digital nomads to come together and get to know each other on a more personal level. They are especially suitable for introverts out there. So if you are more comfortable with small and private groups, this is just the way to meet and make new friends.
Facebook, already known as one of the largest social platforms where people meet and make friends from all corners of the world is a great place to begin your search. As a digital nomad looking to make friends, this is preferably the easiest way to do so. To join a Facebook group, search for your city together with ‘ digital nomad’, a group will pop up if there is one, then search for expat groups in your city and then search for your area of interest, for you to blend in easily. Lastly, ask to join that group and try to be interactive by participating regularly.
Making friends through Facebook groups is not enough. Finding Facebook events and engaging in them is an alternative and a great way to make new friends as a digital nomad, so make a point of trying to find an event coming up in your area and attend. This will give you an opportunity not only to meet and make new friends but also you’ll find people that share the same interests as you have the same aspirations and challenges, the list can go on and on making this an absolute guaranteed way of making friends and developing long term relationships with them.
Using your Network
Has it ever dawned on you how small the world could be? That you can be in one corner of the world and meet your long lost childhood friend, or be waiting in line to pay for your groceries in a store and realize that the person standing in front of you is your classmate from high school or sitting quietly in a bus and notice the person seated next to you is your friend you met online and have really been looking forward to meeting him or her?… your network can be a great way of letting your friends both old and the ones you’ve met online know where you are, and who knows… one of them can be just around the corner for a meetup.
Joining an Online Community
Online communities are a great tool to connect as a digital nomad. There are several online communities out there that you can choose from and make friends from there. These communities provide very active forums where you can participate in and they also organize meetups once in a while where you can new friends in person. So, try and find an online community that is suitable for you, and be on the road to making lots of friends.
Joining a Digital Nomad Program
These are organized programs that bring together digital nomads, where they work together, participate in social events and workshops together. These programs are flexible as you can choose how long you want to stay in them.
Language is what brings people together and makes people comfortable with each other, so learning a new language is a great way of making friends as you can blend in with them, especially if they are from abroad. This can also be a great way of meeting new friends who are looking to learning a new language
Enrolling for Local Courses
Where else could expect to create friendships faster than in learning institutions? You can create some time to learn a new skill, while at it, you’ll find people and even organize events where you and your friends can meet up and learn together. It may be a cooking class, a dancing class, yoga, dancing class the list is endless that you can use to strengthen the bond and establish that long term relationship.
Making friends as a digital nomad is possible with these different, amazing ways. Although, not all platforms can be suitable for you, so try the ones that seem perfect for you in order to kick off in a good start. But as time goes by, you can go a little out of the beaten path, and get uncomfortable, because you might discover new exciting opportunities to make new friends. So, join the wagon and start this journey of meeting and making new friends, who will make your digital nomad world much more interactive and fun!
