Once upon a time, people were forced to sit in cubicles in order to make a living. Now our global world has expanded, making the office setting more obsolete. More and more people are choosing to work remotely, and it’s changing the way we live for the better.
As of 2017, the Gallup poll found nearly half of all employed Americans spending at least part of their time working remotely. Companies are behind it because it cuts cost in the office. City officials are behind it because it cuts down on rush hour traffic. And those that have the pleasure of working from wherever they please are loving it for not having to go further than their living room to put in a day’s work.
That’s not all though. In 2018, 3.9 million Americans, including freelancers, were making a sizeable income from home. The term “home” should be used loosely here because many of these remote workers have gone on to become what’s been thrown around in buzzy talk as “digital nomads.” There are no tethers to desks or office life, but rather, these people take their business with them and plant their roots wherever they feel like it.
It’s a huge trend that’s only expected to continue to grow. Highly appealing to millennials and even those with families, it allows for great flexibility to move about and see more of the world. There’s no commitment to location, and the ease of being able to do a job you love anywhere you go means that you’re on a virtually permanent vacation.
Those that have been traveling while working seem happiest, for they are their own boss and can schedule their day in a way that works for them. For example, when you work the traditional 9 to 5, you have to come in on someone else’s time. But working for yourself wherever you are in the world, your day could begin with something like surf lessons and then a few hours of work.
Freedom is something we’re supposed to have as Americans, however, it’s not very liberating to be tethered to a desk all day. Let’s not forget the movie Office Space. The main character, Peter Gibbons, said, “Human beings were not meant to sit in little cubicles staring at computer screens all day, filling out useless forms and listening to eight different bosses drone on about mission statements!”
How right he was.
