Have you ever dreamed of moving to the tropical oasis that is Mexico while still being able to make money? If the answer yes, then you’ll want to read this article.
Who wouldn’t want to semi-retire in Mexico? With so many things to do, like exploring ancient ruins, diving into emerald waterfalls, hiking canyons, visiting coffee and fruit plantations, white water rafting, snorkeling, and eating delicious Mexican food, it’s a dream that is surprisingly attainable.
There is a term that young entrepreneurs know as digital-nomadism. It allows these individuals to travel anywhere in the
Some digital-nomads are making six-figure incomes annually working part-time from a tropical beach. Graphics and design, online marketing, writing and translation, video and animation, music and audio, programming and tech; it’s all being done by expats who have no intention of ever going back to their native countries.
So how does one get started? Assuming you already have a skill that you can market online and have established your online business, you’ll want to look at a number of things. Location, accommodation, lifestyle, money.
There are many great locations in Mexico to choose from. You’ll want to pick somewhere with relatively low crime, is rich in amenities, and has affordable real-estate. Puerto Vallarta, Tulum, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico City, Guanajuato, La Bahia de Navidad, San Cristobal de las Casas, Huatulco, and Morelia are all great picks from expats who are living there now. It really depends on the lifestyle you want. Do you want to live by the beach in a hot tourism zone, a quiet island, or an inland metropolis?
Now money is going to be the biggest question about making all this a reality. Don’t expect to make a living off your part-time online job alone. It takes time to build a brand and clientele base in any market. So unless you’re already at the height of your online business, expect to need something else to compliment your income. Do you have savings, investments, or a pension? Do you have an emergency fund for medical care or a plane ticket back to your native country? When making any choice to live in another country, you always want to make sure you’re doing it from a financially stable situation.
I’ve seen others become an expat and thrive in other countries from almost broke, but there is always a risk when choosing to do so.
One thing to note is that many items will be 25-50% cheaper in Mexico. Most currency values are much stronger than Mexico’s peso worth. This depends on the area you are in as well.
Now, let’s say you’ve worked all of the factors out. You’ve done it, you’re in Mexico beginning an incredible new stage of your life. You’ve worked hard to get here, so enjoy yourself. Scratch things off your bucket list, make local friends, get a tan, charter a boat into the ocean. You’ve earned it.
