1. Managing your mental state
While you might not be able to control external stresses that come with traveling, what you can do is to manage them. if there is a delay, you don’t need to start going to panic mode, keep in mind that traveling can be unbearable. There is a lot of things you are going to face when traveling, from delays to crowds moving slow, which is why it is very important for you to focus on your stress levels by taking deep breaths, listening to music, and trying your best to maintain calm, and you will find yourself having a more pleasant time traveling even if things are thrown your way. This will be even more important when you are traveling to an unfamiliar environment. I have gone through a lot when traveling, from finding myself in back-alleys in Beijing to being threatened with deportation, being dropped in the wrong location because I was not able to properly communicate with the driver, being extorted, but I was able to remain calm by taking deep breaths.
2. Packing snacks
You are going to feel hungry at one point, whether it is because of never-ending meetings, travel delays, or arriving in a different time zone. You will also have to deal with limited food options when traveling to another country. To help in such situations, I always make sure I carry three to five energy bars when traveling. You should choose something that does not crumble, melt, or expire. You should also ensure the snack is well-packaged so it doesn’t spill inside your bag. Kind bars have become my favorite because they are still tasty even after being deformed and flattened by books and the laptop.
3. Minimizing swapping key items
If you are a regular traveler, it might be a good idea to buy duplicates of key items then leave them in the travel bag, instead of having to repack them after you use them when you are home. This includes things like toothbrushes, phone chargers, laptop chargers, and basic toiletries. 4. Starting a walking or running routine
You should have a walking or running routine if possible. This will help you stay healthy when traveling instead of having to rely on gym equipment. You should consider exercising in the morning because the evenings tend to be full of dinners and working. Morning runs will let you see a place as it wakes up.
5. Planning for the unexpected
There are some unplanned situations that are going to come up, even for a seasoned traveler like me. I did not plan for a delay at the airport or getting to the meeting location in a place that speaks a different language. Have buffer time, entertainment options, and this will help you avoid stress.
