Digital nomads are a group of people who work through technology without being location dependent. Being location independent may sound like a privilege at first but beach selfies while sipping margaritas does not show the true picture of the tough remote life. The digital nomad life may sound abstract to some but it is estimated that by the year 2035, there will be one million digital nomads around the earth.
Digital nomads all over have inspired a lot of people to quit their everyday 9 to 5 routine for a more relaxed and controlled work environment. Gone are the days when people would try their luck for 9 to 5 jobs and fret over being jobless. Today, you self-employ yourself and choose your own working hours and allow yourself the luxury of traveling the world while you earn. The digital world is rapidly growing which makes people more inclined towards carrying their laptops around, enjoying their favorite destinations and earning while they do so.
What all to expect and what all you should be ready to give up to achieve success. This lifestyle is not a piece of cake for people who have a family-oriented lifestyle and are not ready to relocate after every few months. Also, it requires sacrifice in personal and professional space to achieve success and make a mark in the field. If you are an aspiring digital nomad you may have various questions in your mind regarding how to get started with it. Here are a few steps to help you guide about how to get started as a digital nomad.
1) CHOOSE A SKILL SET THAT YOU CAN BUILD
You don’t need to learn a lot of skills to become a digital nomad. All you need to do is pick up one skill and develop it over time. It can range from building a website to learning how to write SEO optimized content or analyzing data using the software. Whichever interest you, you should stick to one skill and aim to develop expertise in it.
Next is the task to determine which skills to learn and how to figure it out. You may choose to learn a skill considering the following aspects
• The kind of skills in demand
• The skillset you will enjoy and love to acquire
• How convenient is it to learn the skillset
You have to find a common skill that intersects all these aspects and just in case you can’t, you don’t need to panic, because then you should choose what you like doing. That way even if you don’t get paid much, you will be content with what you do and will enjoy it.
Lastly, where can you learn digital skills? Some people explore their talents and self-learn the skills but you can always take some formal help from online channels such as Udemy and Skillshare where you can equip yourself with skills pertaining to various topics.
2) LEARN TO SELL YOUR SERVICES
Never ever underestimate the importance of this step. You can always develop a skill and become an expert at it but if you don’t know how to sell it, then no one will hire you. With a 9 to 5 job, you are not competing with the world and are restricted to your office so you do not need to sell your skills other than once during hiring. In the freelance world, you are your own brand and are competing with the world, so you should know how to market yourself.
You could cope with this by staying at one location and build your name there. Let everyone know in the digital and real-world what you do and how well you do it. People around you should know you are an expert and should be able to refer you to their friends and family.
3) REMOVE ANY HINDRANCE TO FREEDOM
There are a lot of factors that stop people from going ahead with a travel lifestyle. One such barrier is the financial obligations which you have to end before you set out to see the world and earn a living for yourself. These financial obligations can be a lease or mortgage that has not ended; a person who is financially dependent on you; or it could be a debt that you still have to clear. Whatever it is, you need to clear your financial commitments and then move ahead with your travel plans.
Then there are relationships which act as another barrier in your quest to acquire freedom for the kind of lifestyle you dream. This could be your girlfriend/boyfriend who is not willing to relocate or your spouse and kids who are totally dependent on you emotionally. This time, it is really a tough decision to make whether to go for your own freedom at the cost of your relationships. This digital nomad lifestyle will want you to make sacrifices in either way but it better you choose which one you are ready to make.
4) DECIDE A DESTINATION
Since you have gained expertise in a particular skill, you know your value and can sell your skill; and you have also decided to reduce any barriers that limit your freedom, it is now time to decide the location and ride away!
As a beginner digital nomad, you need to take care of two things before you choose a location.
1) Affordability
If you find reasonably priced hotels, food, transport and accommodation in a country that also has a robust internet connection then it should be your first pick as a new remote worker.
5) GO FOR IT!
Now that you have done all, use an online application to help you book the cheapest flight to your desired destination, pack your bags light, keep that one thing you hold close to your heart and get going to enjoy the world of digital nomads.
