The digital nomad lifestyle may look glamorous and tempting and why wouldn’t it? Working at your convenience while you get to travel around the world is the best job one could ask for. To others this may look like digital nomads are having the time of their life however, this is not always the case.
Though it is the fastest-growing career and a dream job for many, the life of a digital nomad involves a lot of sacrifices in various capacities of life and the unexpected surprises make you look out for tough realizations. As appealing as this lifestyle may sound, there are misconceptions associated with it.
There is no course book or no formal education that teaches a digital nomad the dos and don’ts of this lifestyle, what all to expect and how to go about earning money. Sometimes, it can get more difficult than the real world, 9 to 5 job. So, if you are an aspiring digital nomad then you must know that there is nothing like an overnight success for you have to work your way up the ladder and in real life, you will have bills and expenses to pay. Following are the myths people believe about digital nomads to be true.
DIGITAL NOMADS ARE RICH
Apparently, it looks like all the digital nomads are filthy rich and have the money to embark on different destinations around the world. While in real life this is not the case. Digital nomads are like average people who have expense and bills to pay and are not living the lavish lifestyle as it may seem. When they choose a location they do so considering the cost of living in that country, the hotel’s expenses, food and travel. They take care of the extra expenses so much that they would rather eat in the order from outside and reserve flights in advance to get it cheaper.
They don’t own a number of mundane treasures rather they save up to travel to their home country and meet their loved ones. They keep no cars or houses in their possession which is why they have no junk. What they do is that they travel and enjoy the freedom to work from their desired location but they do so taking calculated steps and decisions. They are not filthy rich all the time; rather they learn to manage their resources pretty well.
RELOCATION IS DIFFICULT
People often hate moving places because of the various difficulties involved in the move which includes packing, looking for a rental space, unpacking and then settling down. This is why people assume that it is difficult for the digital nomads to change locations after every few months, but sadly this is not the case. Relocating as a digital nomad is easier because of the various options provided by host countries to facilitate the inflow of tourists and remote workers to boost their economy.
There are facilities like cheapest online booking, accommodation, train tickets, air tickets and many more. Also, digital nomads travel light and do not carry with them unnecessary stuff so moving in and out of places is not difficult for them. They prefer furnished and serviced apartment so there remains no need to carry their belongings to every destination they choose. So being a digital nomad and relocating is very different from relocating as an individual who will carry their entire home and move to a new place.
DIGITAL NOMADS GO THROUGH OVERNIGHT SUCCESS
This is the most common misconception about the working digital nomads. People believe that digital nomads go through overnight success while working for a couple of hours they can earn handsome amount to support themselves. This is untrue because most of the digital nomads work crazy hours at the beginning of their career and work a lot to maintain and sustain a client base.
Most may work at low rates initially to create a mark in their field and others work day and night to only set up a new business. They don’t get to take sick leaves and still get paid for the days off; or any maternity leaves, they don’t mostly enjoy the weekend and sometimes have to work throughout the day without regular breaks. All in all, success does not come easy and a lot of time and effort is invested to earn money while being at a dream location being a digital nomad.
DIFFICULT TO BE PRODUCTIVE
While it may seem that staying at a wonderful location might take a toll on productivity but this is mostly not the case with digital nomads. They know they have to pay bills and for that very reason, they can create a work schedule that will work well for them. They stick to a schedule, maintain a to-do list and use online managing tools. A lot of people find new location stimulating and productive for their work.
