Becoming a digital nomad is a dream come true for many people. You find a remote working job, achieved a perfect freelancing idea, established an online store and the list goes on and on. The physical location of yours has nothing to do with your income. However, you are completely location independent.
The world becomes a paradise for you. the vacations are endless and you can live anywhere you like. But do you think everything is that smooth?
The location-independent lifestyle is becoming very popular nowadays. People are pursuing this career option where permanent traveling is nothing but an everyday part of life. They can work from any corner of the world only by connecting through their trusty laptop.
But there comes a point in life either sooner or later when they ask themselves – “and now what?”.
After traveling most parts of the world and realizing that working from various places is not easy and not always fun as it was thought at the beginning, it is when you realize that there are challenges in this field too.
Gradually you realize that with all the independence there are even many intertwined emotional issues as well. This blog is all about the emotional issues that a digital nomad goes through after a certain period of time. read till the end and let us know in the comment section if you have even felt the same.
Here we go!!
Moving Away from Friends
You will get to know who are your best buddies after becoming a digital nomad. Many people who used to be around you all the time won’t even show up like they use to do. You will quickly realize that they spent a lot of time with you according to their convenience. Be it colleagues, business friends or even some of the close people as well.
These people fail to show any initiative to meet whenever it takes effort. But that does not imply that they are bad people. But you will get a clear idea about the number of friends you have. You can surely connect with them through video calls but that is a poor substitute for meeting up.
Sense of Loneliness Amid the Crowd
You will come across many people in your digital nomad journey. they are interesting and they even understand your taste and interest as well. As it might be great to know new people but the real challenge is finding someone you can know well enough. The problem is that as a digital nomad you move all the time and people in your life even keeps on changing too.
perhaps there goes a bragging contest while we meet new people. As digital nomads, we either talk about where we have been or where we are heading. Loneliness is the challenge that we go through. Making friends take time and digital nomads have fewer opportunities to do so.
Lack of Proper Routine
It is a blessing and a curse at the same time to move from one place to another. it is surely interesting to travel and gather a lot of experiences but this aspect hampers the work routine which leads to stress. Moving between places means a high level of alertness. The life of a digital nomad is unpredictable and lacks proper routine.
But don’t take it the other way, it is really interesting to the road around the world and this the finest part of being a digital nomad. But at the same time, it takes a little more effort to navigate daily life. For instance, sometimes it takes hours to find reliable Wi-Fi connections.
However, if you are just traveling then maintaining proper routine won’t be an issue. But if you are working while traveling then you will have to keep your clients happy with regular works and that can be frustrating at times.
Lack of Proper Infrastructure
Another challenge that location independent entrepreneurs have to face is the physical working environment. It might sound great to work from a coffee shop but does this technique works smoothly every time?
Not all coffee shops have the same ambiance. Some will provide you smooth working conditions but this is not the case with every coffee café you visit. There are many cafés where it gets crowded, the internet stops working suddenly and the cafes might close while you have just started your work on the perfect flow.
These issues can subconsciously trigger the overall mental balance of work and lead to unnecessary stress. However, in these cases, you can switch to coworking spaces. Perhaps this is the reason these coworking spaces have become so popular recently.
The Stress of Not Stressing at All
The other side of digital nomad life is that there comes a time when you have nothing to stress about. I don’t say this is for all. But some people earn sufficient from the passive income. Perhaps that leads to a lack of stress.
Human life is interesting because there are a lot of challenges and when you have nothing to worry about this leads to another sense of depression. Stress helps the body to stay alert and even motivated. If you do not have anything to worry about then you will lose perspective and passion.
Constantly feeling relaxing and relieved is not a good recipe for a good life rather challenges and stress are what make life beautiful.
These are the emotional challenges that most digital nomads face. Life of a location independent entrepreneur is tough but that does not mean that you will back up from the idea of becoming a digital nomad. There are emotional challenges in every work field. However, it is always important to find a balance in both work and personal life.
