The Covid-19 Pandemic has begun altering the way the modern workforce functions. With most countries enforcing social distancing, and the corporate sector urging its employees to work from home, many professionals today find themselves struggling with striking a work-life balance, maintaining focus, and carrying out their professional tasks. However, while this is totally understandable, it does not have to be the case! By following this simple guideline on how to conduct remote work from home, you’ll be able to boost your productivity, engagement, and even concentration levels!
Create A Separate Workspace!
One of the most important aspects of transitioning to work at home is to create a separate workspace that allows you to disconnect mentally from ‘work mode’ at the end of the day. So, it is essential that you create a quiet space outside of your bedroom, or the area in your home where you normally spend a lot of time. This way, every time you enter this space, you’ll be mentally prepared to work. Here are a few home office ideas that should help you create a good workspace:
- Office furniture is a huge advantage, as most ergonomic chairs are built to support your body during long hours of sitting. So, if possible, get yourself an office chair and desk that you can place your laptop on.
- Minimize distractions by ensuring your workspace does not have a TV because it’s truly hard to resist the temptation to switch the device on when you’re bored at home.
- Don’t invest in complicated gadgets, because they’re simply not needed. You can get at-home desktops that are pre-assembled to conduct all your office work. Having a separate computer system in your office can help you ensure that you’re not logged into OTT platforms (which goes a long way in resisting the urge to binge-watch your favorite show!).
- Make sure you carry water and snacks into your workspace so that you don’t have to keep leaving it every few minutes.
Use Focus-Building Tools While You Work!
Honestly, it can be quite hard to focus on your work while you’re in the comfort of your own home. You may be distracted by the sound of a neighbor’s dog barking, your children playing, a meal being cooked in your home, or even something as basic as a ping on your smartphone. So, in order to optimize your work-from-home experience, you need to use a few focus-building tools. Here are a few ideas to consider while you’re setting up a home office:
- Use a smart device to play rain sounds or ocean sounds while you work. Now, this may sound a bit silly, but it truly works! The sounds in the background allow your mind to be at ease, while also masking other distracting sounds.
- Use a Tibetan bowl and start your day by chiming it to help create a calming atmosphere that lets you work.
- Use guided meditation apps to strengthen your brain’s ability to concentrate even when you’re surrounded by distractions.
Get Ready for a Productive Day!
Now, when you’re working from home, dressing up in office-attire (or even semi-formal attire) may seem a little pointless. After all, who’s going to see you, right? Well, dressing up daily isn’t really about being able to show off your sartorial choices to others, as much as it’s about helping your mind transition into a more productive zone. When you’re always lounging in your pajamas, you may end up feeling bored, restless, and a little lazy while working. However, the simple act of taking a shower and getting ready can help energize your brain and get it ready to work! Here are a few ideas to help you do the same:
- If comfort is a priority, you can always wear atheleisure! A pair of tights with a comfortable t-shirt or hoodie is more than enough to help your brain get into work mode.
- If you have a lot of e-meetings to attend, you can always switch out the t-shirt for a more formal top. For men, this means a shirt and a tie, while women can get away with a blouse and some earrings. Keep this in mind – your partners will only be able to see the top-half of your body, so you don’t have to dress to the nines.
- Set aside proper formal attire for business meetings that take place at restaurants or offices, so that you don’t have to waste precious time trying to figure out what to wear.
Juggling Family While Working from Home!
Young children may not always understand boundaries, which can make it tricky for parents to focus in their workspace, especially if their children enter the space frequently to play. Fortunately, there are a few ways to work-around this:
- Send your children to a daycare center for a few hours every day so that they not only learn to be independent, but you also get the time you need to focus on tasks.
- If you have a conservative budget and do not want to spend precious money on a daycare, design a play space for your children at home. Apart from stocking the space with toys, you can also ensure that they have a TV to watch their favorite animated shows anytime you allow them to do so. Of course, you must still keep an eye on them. A great way to do so is to schedule regular checks in your day and space your work tasks around them. This is a good way for you to get the break you need from working, without breaking your concentration or feeling guilty about spending fewer hours with your family.
Finally, here’s another tip to keep in mind – allow yourself to take a few short breaks every other hour so that your mind can rest and be ready to tackle more work!
