Can you please tell us about you?
My name is Jesse Neo. I am 23-year-old. Since 2016, I have been creating and releasing electronic and pop music, and consequently, have been reviewed in several big publications, such as The Huffington Post and RESPECT Magazine. Suddenly I received offers to become a songwriter for several brands and YouTube channels. So like what anyone would do, I took the job and relocated to Los Angeles. I am originally from Sydney, Australia.
When did your interest in music begin?
I have been exposed to music since I was around 7, the time I started taking piano, violin and vocal lessons. At first, music was just another activity I did each day, including swimming, visual arts, learning Chinese and playing golf. It wasn’t until I was in primary school that my interest in music really took off. I spent a lot of my high school years playing in the school band and attending concerts. Then in 2016 I took some electronic music production classes, and that made me decide to pursue a career in music. Before then, I wanted to be a scientist.
What made you decide to start Gemtracks?
After being in the industry for several years, I realized that it was lacking a lot of technical innovation. I mean, a lot of other industries are already utilizing technology to do their day-to-day activities, but music seems to be missing out. So I decided to create a marketplace for artists to buy beats, which eventually became Gemtracks.
Which musician has influenced you?
Within pop and electronic music, I am heavily influenced by David Guetta, Martin Garrix, Lady Gaga and Britney Spears. I think their music are so phenomenal that I would do anything to be as successful as them.
How do you think Gemtracks will change the music industry?
First of all, music is still a very physical industry. This means artists must visit studios, collaborate with each other in real life, and perform live at avenues. My goal is to allow musician to do the same thing, but in a digital place. This means allowing them to use the internet to communicate with other musicians, perform via live streaming, and access new ways to stay connected with their fans.
How do you balance your career as a musician and an entrepreneur?
Since Gemtracks and my music are so interrelated, I don’t find that I need the balance my careers. I mean, both are the same thing, which I feel is a good thing. When I first started Gemtracks, I wrote the majority of the beats that were on sale, which was what I was doing while working as a songwriter. When I then got to the technical aspects of building the website, the data process was all linked to the music files too.
What advice would you give to those that see you as an inspirational musician and entrepreneur?
Do what you love, and look for ways you improve it. For me, it was merging music with technology. But for you, it may be something else. You just need to critically analyze what you are doing, ask yourself what-if questions, and with a smart idea, you may be the founder of a startup as well!
